Sudarshan Patnaik : The Sand Sculptures
Mr. Sudarshan Patnaik and Sand Art:-
Mr. Sudarshan Patnaik was born in the coastal town of Puri, Orissa. Being inspired by the voice of his inner soul he started visiting the sea beach at Puri every day right from his childhood. Slowly he started carving out different faces of gods and goddesses in sand with his imagination and creativity. Initially the forms were not mature as he had no Guru because sand art is not considered as a professional form of art in India. Despite these limitations he pursued in his endeavor as he considered the creativity in him is God gifted ability. He took up the challenge to popularize sand art as a professional art form and started exhibiting sand art at various places in India.
Mr. Sudarshan Patnaik’s ultimate objective is to create awareness and enthusiasm among the people and make it popular professional art form among the people for which he is traveling various places in the country and demonstrating this art form by holding work shops and training. Time and again he has tried to replicate various international events through Sand art. recently he made a 4 feet gigh sculpture of Pop King Michael Jackson at Puri. The video link is given below.
Mr. Sudarshan Patnaik has established "The Golden Sand Art Institute” which is first of it’s nature in India.
GOLDEN SAND ART INSTITUTE:-
A dream to realize, a strong zeal in the heart and a dedicated art lover, Sudarshan not only mastered the art, but was keen to propagate the same to others. The determination of this man, support and a consorted effort from his friends in Puri, culminated in the formation of “Golden Sand Art Institute” in the year 1994. The institute is an open air institute with no boundaries and limitation, with sands below the feet and the sky above the head, the institute is located in the sea shore that spans between Hotel May Fair Beach Resort and the Panthanivas in Puri.
Aims of Institute:-
o Propagate the art among the general public.
o Impart training on sand art to art lovers.
o Development and Popularization of this unique art form.
o Develop sand art as a professional career with support from its fine art wing.
The institute that started with only two students has grown to a 35 member team now. The institute organizes an annual “Sand art exhibition” in the month of December. Sudarshan recalls the first exhibition of the institute – “there were only 2 students and they were new. We organized the publicity with help of my local friends who prepared the banners and posters. Then they carved some magnificent arts on the sand, many of which were done by me alone just to show the visitors that we have many participants.” But all these pains were forgotten once the crowd started pouring in and the art form was appreciated by all. There was a huge tourist gathering also.
In search of talents among children the institute organizes various programs including a sand castle competition among local and tourist children, painting competition and cartoon competition. Besides it, organizes some special exhibitions on the occasion of Dashara, New year etc. The Institute also performs demonstration exhibition of sand sculpture every year during the occasion of Puri Beach Festival and Pallishree Mela during Car Festival (Rath Yatra) of Lord Jagannath.
Golden Sand Art Institute, the brain child of Mr. Patnaik is able to produce a band of well trained sand sculptors within a short period. Even some of them master them selves in this unique art form.

The songs of night and day which are loosely woven around the timings of Hindustani ragas. Self assured, epitomizing free spirit and memories ....in her own words: “The visuals of the video embody the transition of night into day and are also symbolic of the beauty and loneliness of the cities we live in.”
Sona launched her brand new single and her other songs with her band on the occasion of the Nokia Digital Music Store launch and International Music Forum , ‘NOKIA Music connects’ on the 26th of August 09 at the Taj Lands End Bandra. The single will first be available at the Nokia Music store worldwide from the 15 of Sept. 09
A global gypsy, her music has taken her to international gigs like that at the prestigious Lincoln Centre New York, where the audience gave her band 2 encores & to stadium gigs like the finale of the 4 Nation Gold Cup in Chandigarh with 40,000 in the stands, on their feet and singing along.
Sona also swept all the music awards in the non-film category in the year 2007. Sona Mohapatra has trained in classical music but has made a career fusing Pop, Folk, Bollywood, Funk and Rock styles into her music & fronts her own electronic band.
Her band of 5 consists of Ethnic strings, Electric guitars, Drums/Percussions, Bass Guitar & Keyboards.
• Sona auditioned for Channel [V] Popstars VIVA (All girl band). However she was rejected because according to the judges her voice was quite similar to her sister Pratichee Mohapatra who later on becomes the winner of that show.
• This setback hasn't stopped her to pursue her singing career. She sang lot of jingles and remix songs of yesteryears. She also sang a jingle 'Kal Ka Bharat Hai Tasveer Aaj Ki' which aired on numerous Indian channels including DD.
• Sona’s first video single – BOLO NA ,became the most requested video on MTV on release followed by Aja Ve which was acknowledged as amongst the most innovative desi videos of all times . • In Bollywood, her first song was 'Lori' from "Family - Ties Of Blood". She had her first duet ‘Chayee Madhoshiyaan’ with Sonu Nigam featured in the film “Jumbo”.
• A single , ‘PAAS AAO’, has been licensed by Close Up across several countries and features in their current advertising campaign. A first for an independent artiste in India
Biography
As a child of a navy officer, Sona had to keep moving every couple of years, spending five years in Africa. Her mother made a point to ensure that her daughter trained in Hindustani music. Of course, Sona was also influenced by Hindi film music and many genres. Sona is one of the few singers on the music scene today that has made it on her own talent. Sona was always focused on becoming a singer, and not on the frills that fame provided.
Sona is an engineering graduate (an engineering degree from College of Engineering and Technology (CET), Bhubaneswar, took her MBA degree from Symbiosis, Pune, and worked as the brand manager in Marico. She is also the elder sister of Pratichee Mohapatra of the band Viva.
Sona is happy about the response to her debut album, that has been eliciting. She prides herself in being a live performer, who is not saddled by images or labels. She wants to make her own music with her own band, rather than following trends. Her album was made possible by a meeting with composer Ram Sampath nearly five years ago. The duo planned to do an album with quality music that is satisfying to the artist's soul, rather than worrying about how to make the album sell. However, they began actual work on the album only two years ago. The rest of the team for the album are Munna Dhiman for the lyrics and Anand Surapur as the music video's director, They were chosen, based on the caliber of their work.
